IndiGo to launch Kolkata–Shanghai daily direct flights; announces Chennai–Réunion services

Hyderabad, March 3 (UNI) Private airlines IndiGo announced the launch of daily non-stop flights between Kolkata and Shanghai, effective from March 29.
The service will be operated using Airbus A320 aircraft, the airline said in a release on Monday.
The development follows the recent reinstatement of the carrier’s operations to Guangzhou and is aimed at strengthening air connectivity between India and China.
Shanghai, regarded as China’s financial and commercial capital, is expected to support expanding trade linkages. Exports from West Bengal to China — including marine products, leather goods and specialised textiles — have recorded growth in FY25-26, and the direct air link is expected to further facilitate business travel.
Passengers can book tickets through the airline’s website, mobile application and authorised travel partners.
Commenting on the launch, Vinay Malhotra, Head of Global Sales, IndiGo, said the new route reflects the airline’s commitment to connecting India with key global markets and is expected to facilitate bilateral trade, tourism and cultural exchange.
In a separate announcement, IndiGo said it will operate thrice-weekly direct flights between Chennai and Réunion Island from April 29.
The route will also be served by Airbus A320 aircraft.
With this addition, Réunion Island becomes IndiGo’s 46th international destination and the 13th international destination from Chennai, the airline said.
Located between Madagascar and Mauritius, Réunion Island is known for its volcanic landscape, including Piton de la Fournaise, and its multicultural heritage.
Malhotra said the new service would offer convenient access to a destination that combines French cultural influences with a tropical island setting, and expressed confidence that the route would see positive response from travellers.
