Rajasthan CM lays foundation stone for wellpad in Cairn’s Mangala Terminal in Barmer

New Delhi, Jan 10 (UNI) Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma on Friday laid the foundation stone for a new wellpad in Mangala Infill to enhance oil recovery from the basin operated by Cairn, Vedanta at Barmer in the state.

Sharma laid the foundation stone during his visit to the crude oil production site – Mangala Processing Terminal, the company said in a release.

In line with Prime Minister’s vision to achieve energy security for India, the Chief Minister emphasised on the importance of increasing oil & gas production from the Barmer basin. He shared, “The oil & gas fields in Barmer are playing a crucial role in strengthening India's domestic production as well as the socioeconomic development of the region.

Rajasthan, with its abundant mineral resources, oil and gas reserves, stands as a key strategic hub for the nation’s energy independence.”

Cairn Oil & Gas began its journey in Rajasthan with the discovery of Mangala, the largest onshore discovery of its time, in 2004. Production commenced in August 2009 just about 5 years after the discovery. Cairn is continuing its investments by embarking on new exploration programs including unconventional projects such as Tight Oil, Shale etc. to enhance production.

It has recently initiated one of the world’s largest ASP injection in the Mangala field. The company is fostering entrepreneurship in the region by partnering with local entrepreneurs in Small Field Development, Drilling Rigs, Well Services and Facility Construction enabling growth and development in Barmer.

Recently, Vedanta Chairman Anil Agarwal announced Cairn’s plans to invest Rs 35,000 crore over the next three years to double production from Rajasthan. The goal is to drill over 200 wells for exploration, appraisal and development over the next three years. The company will focus on enhanced oil recovery (EOR) techniques and ASP injection in Bhagyam and Aishwariya, while focusing on new exploration.

Rajasthan is one of the largest onshore crude oil producing state in India, contributing approximately 18% of the country’s domestic production (2022-23). With investments to the tune of Rs 90,000 crore in the Barmer basin so far, Cairn has made significant contribution to the region and the state of Rajasthan while driving socio-economic development.

Cairn’s operations have positively impacted about 25 millon lives in FY2024 through large scale social impact programs across health, education, livelihood, women empowerment among others. The company is currently operating 124 Nand Ghars in Barmer region touching 3,000+ children annually. Committed to sustainable development, the company aims to plant 2 million trees and achieve Net Zero by 2030, the company added.
