Reliance arm patents AI blood test for early cancer detection

Bengaluru, July 7 (UNI) In a significant breakthrough for cancer diagnostics, Reliance Industries subsidiary Strand Life Sciences has secured an Indian patent for an artificial intelligence-powered technology that can detect cancer at an early stage from a simple blood sample, potentially paving the way for more accessible and scalable screening across the country.
The patented platform combines cell-free DNA (cfDNA) analysis, advanced genome sequencing, biologically informed methylation and fragmentomic profiling, and machine learning to identify cancer and predict its tissue of origin through a minimally invasive blood test.
The development comes at a time when cancer is emerging as one of India's fastest-growing public health challenges, with more than 1.5 million new cases estimated every year. A large proportion of patients are diagnosed only in advanced stages, when treatment becomes more complex and survival rates decline.
According to Strand Life Sciences, a key innovation behind the patent is its ability to accurately capture genome-wide methylation patterns—one of the strongest biological signatures of cancer—using genome sequencing with minimal loss of information, thereby improving the sensitivity of early detection.
The company believes the technology could help overcome the limitations of conventional cancer screening, which currently covers only a handful of cancers and remains difficult to scale. As genome sequencing becomes more affordable, the platform has the potential to support large-scale population screening without requiring major investments in new healthcare infrastructure.
"Early detection is an increasingly relevant topic as cancer is becoming one of India's greatest public health challenges. This patent reflects our commitment to developing scientifically rigorous, AI-enabled liquid biopsy technologies that can help detect cancer earlier from a simple blood sample," said Ramesh Hariharan, CEO of Strand Life Sciences.
He said the innovation marks an important step towards making precision cancer screening more accurate, scalable and accessible.
The patent further strengthens Strand Life Sciences' intellectual property portfolio in liquid biopsy technologies and reinforces its strategy of developing AI-enabled molecular diagnostics for early cancer detection and precision oncology.
A spin-off from the Indian Institute of Science and now a subsidiary of Reliance Industries, the Bengaluru-based genomics company works with global pharmaceutical, biotechnology and diagnostics firms in research, drug development and precision medicine while expanding its integrated multi-omics capabilities.
