Telangana Govt initiates expansion plan for nine new Singareni mining projects

Hyderabad, May 9 (UNI) The Telangana Government has initiated a comprehensive expansion plan for development of nine new mining projects for Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) to ensure long-term energy security, sustain coal production and protect employment opportunities.
The initiative is aimed at offsetting production losses expected due to gradual closure of existing mines following depletion of coal reserves and to meet the growing energy requirements of the state.
The state government has directed SCCL to expedite preparatory activities and obtain all necessary statutory clearances at the earliest.
Detailed proposals for the nine projects have already been submitted to the union Ministries of Coal, Forest and Environment for approvals.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu are closely monitoring the progress of approvals.
Bhatti Vikramarka has also held meetings with officials in New Delhi seeking speedy clearances for the projects.
Officials said approvals have already been obtained for three projects.
Coal production has commenced at the Naini Block in Odisha after coordination with the Odisha Government, while the VK Coal Mine in Kothagudem has completed major statutory formalities and is ready for commencement of production.
The government estimates that four existing SCCL mines may cease operations by 2027-28, potentially reducing annual coal production by 12.51 million tonnes.
The proposed projects are expected to bridge the gap and ensure uninterrupted coal supply for nearly 20 years.
The proposed projects include new open-cast mines, expansion of existing operations and extraction of residual coal reserves from previously closed underground mines.
Among the key projects, the VK Coal Mine in Kothagudem has estimated reserves of 190 million tonnes. Other proposed projects include: JK Open Cast Mine in Yellandu – 19.68 million tonnes ; Ramagundam OC-1 Expansion Project – 181.60 million tonnes; Goleti Open Cast Mine in Bellampalli – 38.98 million tonnes ; MVK Open Cast Project – 30.34 million tonnes ; Manuguru Open Cast Extension – 40.45 million tonnes; RKP OCP Phase-2 in Mandamarri – 34.42 million tonnes and PK Coal Mine at Kondapur in Manuguru area – 62 million tonnes,
Meanwhile, SCCL Chairman and Managing Director Buddhaprakash Jyoti on Saturday reviewed the progress of the proposed projects with senior officials.
He directed officials to expedite pending statutory approvals and ensure commencement of production from at least three projects during the current financial year in line with the targets set by the state government.
