Bengaluru, Mar 11 (UNI) The Karnataka government has initiated a high-level inquiry into allegations that senior IPS officer Dr K Ramachandra Rao misused airport protocol privileges to facilitate gold smuggling activities involving his stepdaughter, actress Ranya Rao.
The investigation follows the arrest of Ranya by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) at Kempegowda International Airport on March 4. Ranya was allegedly found in possession of 14.8 kilograms of gold bars, valued at over Rs12 crore, concealed in a belt strapped to her body. Subsequent searches at her residence led to the seizure of additional gold jewelry worth Rs 2.06 crore and Rs 2.67 crore in cash.
Reports suggest that Rao, currently serving as the Managing Director of the Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation, may have exploited his official position to extend VIP protocol services at the airport, aiding his stepdaughter in evading customs checks.
In response to these allegations, the government has appointed Additional Chief Secretary Gaurav Gupta as the investigating officer. The probe aims to examine the misuse of airport protocol services and ascertain the extent of Dr Rao's involvement. The investigation is set to commence immediately, with a report expected within a week.
During a court appearance on March 10, Ranya was remanded to judicial custody until March 24. She reportedly broke down in court, alleging verbal abuse and mental harassment during her detention by DRI officials.
The case has also led to further arrests, including that of Tarun Raju, the grandson of a prominent hotelier, who is believed to have connections with Ranya and is allegedly involved in the smuggling operation.
Opposition leaders, including former Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, have demanded a thorough investigation into the matter, emphasising the need for accountability and transparency.
The unfolding events have raised concerns about potential security lapses and the misuse of official privileges, prompting the government to take swift action in addressing the allegations.
