Op Parakram: Martyr Captain, who lived by Chetwode Motto, paid tributes on death anniv

Bhopal, Jan 7 (UNI) It is said that the heaviest burden in this world is a young son’s corpse on an old father’s shoulder and the crushing weight of that titanic burden can be fathomed in some measure by the discerning civilian on observing the countenance of Mr VK Gandhi whose 26-year-old son Shreyans made the supreme sacrifice in Rajasthan’s Ranjeetpura village as an officer of the Indian Army.

“On this day in 2003, I received a phone call that my son had encountered an ‘accident’. I went to the railway station -- for rushing to Bikaner -- and there I received another call that my boy attained martyrdom. The Army and the regime paid unalloyed respect to my son,” Mr Gandhi said in a voice whose tone and timbre made it clear that pride and grief were battling each other to be the uppermost emotion.
