Chennai, Apr 19 (UNI) An estimated 63.20 per cent of the total 6.23 crore electorate
have cast their ballots till 1700 hours, as the single phase Polling to elect 39 members
to the 18th Lok Sabha from Tamil Nadu, progressed smoothly, amid tight security.
Talking to reporters, Chief Electoral Officer Satyabrata Sahoo said 63.20 per cent polling
was reported in Tamil Nadu till 1700 hrs.
Dharmapuri recorded the highest of 67.52 per cent till 1700 hrs and Chennai Central the
lowest at 57.04 per cent.
A majority of the Constituencies, barring the three seats in Chennai, recorded more than
60 per cent polling and it is expected to improve further, with an hour left for polling to end.
In the polling to the lone Lok Sabha seat in Puducherry, 73 per cent of voters have cast
their ballots.
In the bye-election to Vilavancode Assembly seat in Tamil Nadu in the southern tip of
Kanniyakumari, the turnout was 56.68 per cent.
The fate of a total of 950 candidates--876 men and 74 women--candidates, including 609
Independents will be decided today.
