Tokyo regrets Russia's veto of US-Japan UNSC draft resolution on WMDs in space

Tokyo, April 25 (UNI) The Japanese government regrets Russia's veto of a US- and Japan-drafted UN Security Council resolution prohibiting the use of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in outer space, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said on Thursday.
On Wednesday, Russia blocked the draft resolution after a Russian-Chinese amendment to extend the ban to the placement of any type of weapon in space rather than just WMDs was rejected in a 7-7 vote with one abstention. Thirteen UNSC members voted in favour of the draft resolution, while China abstained.
"It is regrettable that Russia, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council and being responsible for maintaining peace and security in the international community, has decided to veto this resolution concerning security and peace in space," Hayashi told a regular briefing.
