Anna University sexual assault: Police detains BJP Mahila Morcha workers for taking out rally

Madurai, Jan 3 (UNI) Bharatiya Janata Party Tamil Nadu State Mahila Morcha President Umarathi Rajan, former Member of the National Commission for Women Khushbu Sundar were among the party’s women cadres who were detained on Friday, when they attempted to take out the ‘justice rally’ from Madurai to Chennai for a woman student, who was sexually assaulted inside the campus of Anna University.
Commotion prevailed for some time, when the police blocked the protesters from taking out the rally from Arulmigu Sri Chellathamman Temple near Simmakkal in Madurai city and forcibly took them in police vans to a private marriage hall, where they were detained as a preventive measure for defying the ban order.
Umarathi Rajan, Kushbu Sundar and other BJP women’s wing leaders holding anklets on their hands shouted slogans against the Tamil Nadu government for deteriorating law and order situation and atrocities against women in the state.
Speaking at the protest, Kushbu said every person is protesting as per law, demanding justice for the girl student who was sexually assaulted at Anna University. The DMK has miserably failed to protect women from atrocities and why Chief Minister M K Stalin was remaining silent on the sexual assault on the girl, she asked.

BJP state president K.Annamalai on Monday announced that the party’s state Mahila Morcha will take out the justice rally from Madurai to Chennai and will present a memorandum to Tamil Nadu Governor after reaching Chennai to condemn the atrocities against women.
He alleged that the accused in the sexual assault case is linked to DMK and the state government is attempting to conceal the truth in the issue.
A 19-year-old girl student was sexually assaulted inside the Anna University campus on December 23, sending outrage from opposition parties and women’s associations.
Taking suo-motu cognizance of the sexual assault case, a two-member fact-finding committee from the National Commission for Women conducted an inquiry with varsity officials, the victim, her family members, security personnel and investigation officers.
The Madras High Court ordered a Special Investigation Team comprising three senior IPS officers to probe the case.
