Delhi govt proposes major hike in labour welfare schemes, plans to set up labour hostel

New Delhi Oct 13 (UNI) The Delhi government today announced a major hike in the financial benefits under various welfare schemes for registered construction workers, besides setting up 'labour hostels' for them in various parts of the city among other facilities. The maternity benefits have been trippled from Rs 10,000 to Rs 30,000 while there has been a four times increase in the ex-gratia payment in case of permanent disability. In addition to this, a pension benefit has been increased from Rs 1000 to 3000 per month with the increase of Rs 300 every year, the medical assistance has been hiked to Rs 10000 from the existing Rs 1000 among other benefits. Also, for the first time, the labour hostels would be proposed for the construction workers and their dependents in the high level 14 member 'Delhi Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board' meeting which was re-constituted under the supervision of Delhi Labour Minister Gopal Rai. Besides, it was also decided to set up of Mohalla clinics, new beds in the hospital reserved for construction workers, Schools for construction worker's wards, setting up of 'Pratibha' talent academy for construction workers, toilets, drinking facility and Aam Aadmi canteens for workers at labours chowks. The proposed enhancement would benefit 2.5 lakhs registered labourers and their dependents in the capital. The total of 1843 crore is collected by the Delhi government for welfare schemes entitled to construction workers, said minister Rai. " The newly proposed schemes would directly benefit labourers in Delhi. The Supreme Court recently raised the concren and asked all state and central authorities to bring reforms" said Gopal Rai. " A survey would be carried out by the consultants in the area who will identfy the locations for the construction of hospitals, schools, hostels for construction workers and their dependents. The contractor would be directed to facilitate the accommodation in the proposed hostels. The contractor would not be allowed to create any slums or shelter at the contruction sites", he added. The Delhi government will also identify the talented lot among the wards of the construction workers so as to ensure they will get quality education. The talent school under 'Pratibha Academy' will be developed where a batch of 40 each student would be provided the quality education by the Delhi government, informed labour minister. UNI AP SY 2248
