New Delhi, Mar 17 (UNI) President Droupadi Murmu on Friday spoke on the phone with new Nepalese President Ram Chandra Paudel and congratulated him on assuming the office, and also discussed ways to further strengthen the bilateral friendship.
The President’s House in a tweet said:
“President Droupadi Murmu had a telephonic conversation with Rt. Hon. President Ram Chandra Paudel of Nepal. She congratulated him on assuming the office of the President, and discussed ways to further strengthen the unique India-Nepal friendship.”
An official statement said that President Droupadi Murmu spoke with the President of Nepal Ram Chandra Paudel over telephone today evening.
“The President, who is presently on tour in Kerala, called up President Paudel and congratulated him on assuming the office of the President of Nepal.
“Both Presidents noted the unique and multifaceted relations between India and Nepal. They also discussed ways to further advance bilateral cooperation and strengthen the strong bonds of friendship between the peoples of our two countries.
“The President expressed confidence that under the guidance of President Paudel, India-Nepal bilateral relations would reach even greater heights,” it said.
Nepal elected Ram Chandra Paudel, of the Nepali Congress, as President on March 9. He was the common candidate of the eight-party alliance that included Nepali Congress and Prime Minister 'Prachanda'-led CPN (Maoist Center).
This was the third presidential election in Nepal since the country became a republic in 2008. The tenure of Bidya Devi Bhandari ended on March 12.
Before being elected as President, Ram Chandra Paudel served as Nepal’s Deputy Prime Minister, cabinet minister, and Speaker.
