Horatti resigns as Karnataka Council Chairman

Horatti resigns as Karnataka Council Chairman

Bengaluru, Mar 23 (UNI) Karnataka Legislative Council Chairman Basavaraj Horatti on Sunday announced his decision to step down from his post, citing dissatisfaction with recent developments in the House.
Addressing reporters, Horatti expressed disappointment over his inability to maintain decorum during the proceedings and stated that continuing in the position was no longer appropriate.
"I am disheartened by the recent developments in the House. I have failed to control the proceedings, and I feel it is not right for me to continue as Chairman," Horatti said.
The veteran leader criticised the growing indiscipline in the House, with members frequently disrupting proceedings.
"There are important bills to be discussed, but instead of engaging in meaningful debates, members resort to sloganeering and even bring placards into the Council. I feel I am not fit to preside over such a House. Just the other day, I remained silent for 17 minutes, which made me realise that I should not continue in this position," he remarked.
Horatti, a seasoned politician with 45 years of experience, lamented the lack of respect shown to the Chair. "The Legislative Council is meant to be a platform for thoughtful deliberations, and Karnataka’s Upper House has been a model for the country. Holding the position of Chairman is an honour, but if those in responsible positions do not receive the respect they deserve, what is the point?" he questioned.
Clarifying that his decision was not impulsive, Horatti stated that he would consult his close associates and well-wishers before finalising his next steps. "I have expressed what is in my heart, but I will take a final decision after seeking guidance from my friends and confidants," he added. UNI BDN SSP
