Mizoram grapples with schools without students

Aizawl, Mar 16 (UNI) Several government middle and upper primary schools in Mizoram continue to operate without students while teachers remain posted, raising concerns over the state’s school rationalisation efforts.
According to state School Education Minister Vanlalthlana, five government schools currently have no students but retain teachers, while 21 others have more teachers than students. Additionally, 13 schools have an equal number of students and teachers.
In a written reply to a question from Mizo National Front (MNF) MLA Ramthanmawia, Vanlalthlana revealed that Lawngtlai district, which borders Myanmar and Bangladesh, has five Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) schools with more teachers than students, and another five where the number of students matches that of teachers.
Mamit district, located near Bangladesh and Tripura, also faces similar issues. Six schools have more teachers than students, while Luimawi Middle School has an equal count of eight students and eight teachers.
South Mizoram’s Lunglei district presents an even starker picture. Thehlep Upper Primary School (SSA) currently has two teachers but no students. Three other schools have more teachers than students, while Chhumkhum UPS (SSA), Dinthar Comprehensive Elementary School, and Hmuntlang Middle School (SSA) each have a 1:1 student-teacher ratio.
In Kolasib district, which shares a border with Assam, Lenhmuikawn UPS (SSA) has three teachers but no students, while Zotlang UPS (SSA) has four teachers posted despite having no students. Other schools in the district reflect similar inefficiencies—Zodin UPS (SSA) has six teachers for a single student, South Chhimluang UPS (SSA) has seven teachers for one student, and Sethawn UPS (SSA) has seven teachers for just four students.
Aizawl district is not exempt from the trend, with two middle schools—Chhanchhuahna Khawpui and Hermon—each having teachers but no students. Government Republic Middle School has five teachers for only three students, while Tuikhurhlu Middle School, near the capital, has an equal number of students and teachers at five each.
Other districts also reflect the imbalance. In Khawzawl district, Khualen UPS (SSA) has six students and six teachers. In Serchhip, Buhkangkawn Middle School (SSA) has five teachers for just three students, while Government Midland Comprehensive School has seven teachers for four students. Meanwhile, in Saitual, Buhkangkawn Middle School (SSA) has a 1:1 student-teacher ratio of five each.
Despite multiple attempts by successive governments to implement a rationalisation policy for teachers, efforts to maintain an appropriate student-teacher ratio across schools have largely failed.
According to the state school education department's data as of August 31, 2023, Mizoram has 564 government middle schools with 3,767 teachers, including 1,636 female teachers, catering to 27,333 students, of whom 13,530 are girls. The numbers highlight the ongoing challenge of optimising teacher deployment to ensure efficient use of resources in the state’s education sector.
